Wrestling with Style

Updated: Nov 3, 2024

There are three styles of wrestling - folkstyle, freestyle, and greco-roman. Many young wrestlers participate in scholastic wrestling during their school season and then participate in a separate freestyle/greco season with their club.

Here's the basics to each style (we will write a more in depth description as the seasons progress).

FOLKSTYLE

  • main style used at the educational level

  • also known as 'scholastic' wrestling and 'collegiate' wrestling

  • all about take downs, turning your opponent, and pins

  • focuses on controlling opponents on the mat

  • score by maintaining dominance

FREESTYLE

  • one of the Olympic styles of wrestling

  • uses offensive and defensive leg techniques

  • all about throws and take downs

  • score by throws and rolls

GRECO-ROMAN

  • one of the Olympic styles of wrestling

  • only allowed to use the upper body

  • no take downs by the legs

  • demands strength and technique

  • score by upper body locks, throws, and rolls
