If you are new to the sport of wrestling, you are probably wondering what your child needs to participate. This simplified list will get your shopping list started. Absolute must-have items are marked with an asterisk (*).
*WRESTLING SHOES -
These specially designed shoes are made to fit the foot like skin. They should not have any gaps or loose areas when worn with athletic socks (moisture wicking socks work the best). The have a high traction tread on the bottom. It is very important that your wrestler knows to only wear their wrestling shoes on and around the mat. Wrestling shoes are not worn outside, at home on carpet, or in concession areas at tournaments. Wearing them off the mat will reduce the effectiveness of the tread and is a primary source of dirt (and therefore infection) being introduced to the mat.
*HEADGEAR -
Headgear is required for wrestling up to the collegiate level. A good fitting headgear is important to protect your wrestler from developing 'cauliflower ear'.
*MOUTH GUARD -
A mouth guard is exactly what it sounds like and is required for all levels of wrestling. To get a proper fit you will warm the mouth guard in warm water and then have your wrestler bite into it to mold it to their mouth. Be sure to put your wrestler's name on the case to prevent mix ups with their teammates.
*WATER BOTTLE -
A good water bottle is easy to squeeze and has a squirt top.
*GEAR BAG -
Let's face it.... wrestling is a dirty, stinky sport and tournaments last all day. The bag you choose is really important to help reduce the spread of infection and keep your wrestler prepared. It should have the following features -
dry compartment - this will be used to carry a clean set of clothes, extra socks, an athletic towel (because sweat happens), and a towel for showering (because showering after practice or a match/tournament is a must)
mesh compartment - for dirty, wet clothes (and there will be A LOT of them)
main compartment used to keep shoes separate from other items in the bag
water bottle pocket
front pocket that fastens - used to store tape (used to tape shoelaces), antibacterial soap (did we say that showering after practice is a must?), post practice snacks (chocolate milk is a generational favorite)
headgear clip - your wrestler will attach their headgear outside their bag to have it easily accessible
The following items are also helpful, but not necessarily required.
BOARD SHORTS -
This style of athletic short is easy to move in and is quick dry.
RASH GUARD -
Some wrestlers prefer to wear a long-sleeve rash guard during practice to help prevent infection. Some do not like the feel of rash guards and prefer just a plain t-shirt.
SINGLET -
A singlet is not required until your wrestler participates in a tournament. Typically clubs and teams provide an opportunity for families to buy a singlet with the team/club logo. Our advice is to hold off on purchasing a singlet until you speak with your child's coach.
